| South Africa: Township Rugby to Get a Boost
A move to give rugby a boost in the townships is making headway, as aspiring young people battle it out in the townships of the Western Cape. The Steve Tshwete Rugby tournament seeks to unleash potential players with the ability to play for the national team, the Springboks. The annual tournament, in its third year now, is sponsored by the provincial Department of Sport and Recreation. "Through sponsoring the tournament the Department aims to give exposure to township rugby as part of its strategy to encourage youth in the townships to play the sport," said Departmental Spokesperson Mandla Yeki. The tournament got off to a great start on Sunday at Khayelitsha stadium, where 14 out of 18 teams were eliminated in a knock-out format. The remaining four teams will play against each other in the semi-finals on Sunday, with the last two proceeding to the finals on the same day.
SA Rugby managing director Johan Prinsloo has been axed. He was appointed about two years ago, while Brian van Rooyen was president of SA Rugby. He will retain his position as chief executive officer of the SA Rugby Football Union (Sarfu). Prinsloo said he had referred the matter to his lawyers and would discuss it with the rugby executive on his return from a business visit to Dublin. Netballers off to Malawi The SPAR national netball team set off yesterday for Blantyre in Malawi for the annual Cosana Games. The Games will be played at the Malawi Youth Centre in Blantyre from tomorrow, with the final on Saturday. The teams taking part are Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Man fined for showing rugby boys porn A man who gave alcohol to youths in a Canterbury rugby club's under-15 and under-17 teams and showed them a pornographic movie has received glowing references from the sport's provincial body.
