Welsh stars call for arms trade controls

CAPTURED in black and white, arms outstretched, palms bearing their names in scrawled marker pen, these four Welsh celebrities make a striking picture.

But their gestures are less about creating art than sending a message.

Stuart Cable, Anneliese Heard and rugby players Alix Popham and Gareth Thomas are making their stand against the global arms trade as part of an international campaign.

The four Welsh celebrities have added their names - and faces - to a growing number of musicians, actors, sports personalities and other public figures in support of the Control Arms campaign. Their images were captured by Welsh celebrity photographer Julian Castaldi.

FIVE Springbok rugby players were last night fighting to have all DVDs of the notorious Kamp Staaldraad destroyed after earlier winning a court bid to stop distribution of footage which shows them nude.

The Springbok rugby team endured a stint at the controversial camp as preparation for the 2003 World Cup.

Zambia: 2 Rugby Players Injured

TWO rugby players currently in camp with the Zambia national team have picked up injuries ahead of this weekend's Africa qualifying match against Zimbabwe. National team trainer Innocent Sakala disclosed in an interview that Yotam Nyirenda and Ronnel Armengol sustained injuries during training.

"Yotam Nyirenda picked up a knee injury during training and is now out of the team. Ronnel Armengol, who also has a knee injury, is being assessed and the doctors will have the final say," Sakala said.

He said the team was getting on well with the preparations and he was expected to trim the team from 28 to 22. And team captain Musonda Kaminsa is bubbling with confidence that his side will defeat the Zimbabweans.

"We have been undergoing intense training much more than when we were preparing for Madagascar," Kaminsa said.

Sub-Unions bring 'small miracle' to fledgling rugby school

Rugby has been responsible for a small miracle at the Lukhanyiso Primary School in the African township of Paballelo outside Upington.

The school, which is one of two primary schools in Pabalello, only started playing rugby a year ago and has had to rely on its own scarce resources to establish the sport in the under-11 and under-13 age groups.

But Lukhanyisos young rugby players were given some outside support on Friday when the Eastern Province team that is participating in the SARU Sub-Unions tournament held a coaching clinic for them at the Danie Kuys Stadium. The clinic was organized on the initiative of local community radio station, Riverside Radio. Griquas also donated rugby balls and water bottles to the school.

This is the first time we are receiving outside assistance for our young rugby players, said Livingstone vu-Masonke, the school coach who was instrumental in the establishment of rugby.
