Sub-Unions bring 'small miracle' to fledgling rugby school

Rugby has been responsible for a small miracle at the Lukhanyiso Primary School in the African township of Paballelo outside Upington.

The school, which is one of two primary schools in Pabalello, only started playing rugby a year ago and has had to rely on its own scarce resources to establish the sport in the under-11 and under-13 age groups.

But Lukhanyisos young rugby players were given some outside support on Friday when the Eastern Province team that is participating in the SARU Sub-Unions tournament held a coaching clinic for them at the Danie Kuys Stadium. The clinic was organized on the initiative of local community radio station, Riverside Radio. Griquas also donated rugby balls and water bottles to the school.

This is the first time we are receiving outside assistance for our young rugby players, said Livingstone vu-Masonke, the school coach who was instrumental in the establishment of rugby.

RUGBY: Repeat wins will seal place in Cup quarterfinals

Hawke's Bay Rugby Football Union CEO Mike Bishop was a happy man when the Air New Zealand Cup repechage draw was announced last night.

His Kelt Capital Magpies avoided a Thursday night match and drew three teams they have beaten previously this season "in one shape or another in pre-season or Air New Zealand Cup games".

The Magpies open the repechage by hosting Manawatu at Napier's McLean Park at 8pm on Friday. Hawke's Bay beat Manawatu in two pre-season encounters.

On Friday, September 22 the Magpies play Bay of Plenty at Mount Maunganui's Blue Chip Stadium in a 6.

Uganda: Inexperience Cost Cranes

THE Rugby Cranes will rue the missed opportunities they had when they faced the Atlas Lions of Morocco last Saturday at Kampala Rugby Club.

Credit to the Lions. they held off onslaught after onslaught as the back line tried to punch through their water-tight defence in the 2007 World Cup qualifier. Very rarely does a team enjoy so much territory and possession, yet fail to convert the dominance into points.

The Ugandan pack executed the game plan well, with the loose-forwards working tirelessly to get to the break-down to secure the ball. So effective were they, they managed to turn over possession only a hand full of times in the tackle/ruck area, with two opposition steals to their credit. The lineout was also very secure; they managed a couple of steals on the oppositions throw.
